Chihuahua Names: Top 100 Boy and Girl Names

Chihuahua name tag with "Bruiser"

Choosing a name for your Chihuahua is a big decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly. After all, it’s not something you can easily change a few years down the road if you decide that you no longer like it. Dogs learn through repetition, and teaching your Chihuahua their name will require you to speak it dozens of times per day. This is why it’s important for owners to choose a meaningful and catchy name to which they can relate.

Don’t stress out if you haven’t picked a name for your Chihuahua yet, because we’ve compiled a list of the top 100 boy and girl Chihuahua names and naming tips below.

Names Based on Your Chihuahua’s Personality

Chihuahua standing up

Chihuahuas are well-known for their unique personality and characteristics. If you want to take full advantage of this, consider naming your Chihuahua something related to his or her personality. Doing so is the perfect way to let the world know just what type of dog they are.

If your Chihuahua has a funny or unique personality (which most of them do!), then you shouldn’t have a problem finding a name to suit them. For example, if your Chihuahua likes to pounce on their toys, you can name them “Tiger.”

Chihuahuas are the smallest dog breed in the world, but if you’ve ever owned one you know they don’t act like it. When faced against a dog two or even three times their size, they’ll show their teeth while holding their ground. If this sounds like your Chihuahua, you could name them something ferocious, such as “Bruiser” “Bowser” or “Rex.” The best part of naming your Chihuahua after their personality is the unique and personal touch it adds.

Big or Small Names

Even though the Chihuahua breed holds the title for the smallest dog breed, you can choose either small or large names for them. The reason this two-sided naming principle works so well with Chihuahuas is because of their large personality. Small names such as “Bitty, “Amos,” and “Tinkerbell,” “Mouse,” and “Twinkie” are just a couple of ideas that relate to their physical size. On the other hand, “Titan” or “Hulk” are two popular Chihuahua names that display their big personalities.

Boy or Girl Names

Many owners overlook the importance of choosing a name that “fits” the gender of their Chihuahua. Whether you have a boy or girl Chihuahua, you should take this into consideration when choosing their name. Naming a boy Chihuahua “Bambi” or “Jasmine” probably isn’t the best choice. Instead, go with a name that’s suited towards the male gender, such as “Baxter” or “Amos.”

Names Based on Color Coat

Chihuahua coats come in a near-endless variety of colors and markings. One popular naming method used by owners is to choose a name that’s based on their Chihuahua’s coat. If your Chihuahua is all black, “Midnight” would be a suitable name. A gray Chihuahua could be named “Smokey.” If your Chihuahua is all white, maybe “Snowflake” would be a good name for them. The possibilities are endless when it comes to naming your Chihuahua based on their coat.

Chihuahua Naming Tips

Apple-head Chihuahua

Many owners make the mistake of calling their Chihuahua by two or more different names. Once you think of a name for your Chihuahua, stick with it and only call them using the name you’ve chosen. Don’t go making up nicknames or variations either. Calling your Chihuahua multiple names will confuse them, so only use a single name.

In addition, you should also avoid names that sound familiar to any commands you’ve trained your Chihuahua with, as well as names of other family members in the house. You want your Chihuahua’s name to be unique and distinct so they’ll better recognize it when spoken.

I have 3 chi’s. One is Wheels Mahoney because he runs everywhere, one is Errol Flynn because he is so handsome, and the other is Roger, short for Rogerbot3000, because he is a shredding machine. Getting a pup on Tuesday, the only female and her name is going to be Stella. I rehabbed wolves for over 20 years and went from that to these little sample dogs who wear coats, sunglasses, etc. Amazing breed even though they are so stubborn I can’t believe it. Love them.

I have always adored Wa Was and after I had to put my 14 yr old black lab to sleep due to breast cancer on 09/26/17, a guy who works with my son said he had a wa wa that someone moved and abandoned. Lord yes I took that darling little dog and cuddling with him is healing my heart day by day. I’ll never understand how anyone can abandon an animal to fend for themselves. He is a dark brown little boy and I am going to name him peanut or boss. This little angel will never be thrown away again. He was sent from above to help me grieve and recover. How can I not look at or hold him and not smile? Terrie C. RN

We’ve had 2 chihuahua’s the first one was named skipper. Our second one we picked up at a shelter and was trying to pick a name for him. The tv was on and a sunny d commercial was on. They called sunny on commercial and he responded. So he picked his name. They both passed about 16 years old. We are driving 1000 miles to rescue a new baby. Thinking of naming her Mile (millie). We’ll see what she picks.

I know that pain. My rescue pup had just turned 9 months old. I had her rabies shot and microchipped, 9 days later she had a seizure and rushed her to vet on June 12, 2017. They found an undiagnosed heart murmur, put her on oxygen but she had a major heart attack and they couldn’t revive her. I was crushed! I only had her 6 months, and she was my emotional support dog. We rescued each other and bonded immediately. She never showed any signs of illness until that morning. Her 1st birthday birthday would have been on Sept 9, MY birthday!! I cried all morning. I am so thankful for the short time I had with her. Even with all the pain, I would do it again but hope I never have to. I’m sorry for your loss. I just rescued another Chihuahua, 2 yrs old and weighs 5 lbs. I was worried it might be hard to bond with her as quickly. But we have. She is the sweetest cuddly dog just like my Ginger. Even total strangers are surprised when I tell them I’ve only had her a few days, they say it looks like we have been together for years!! She is a great little companion. Still haven’t named her but hopefully the perfect name will come to me just as it did for Ginger. Take whatever time you need to grieve and then get another. They won’t ever replace your other dog, but they will fill the hole in your heart! πŸ˜ƒβ€

I lost Sissy at age 13 after 4 years of heart issues. It was worse than losing a relative. It’s been 13 years and I still cry at the thought of her. No I don’t cry easy but this tiny girl took a huge piece of me when she passed. I know when I enter the gates of Heaven she will be standing at my Mothers side to greet me, my only solice. I still have chihuahuas but none her color, I just can’t 😒

My little angel passed away this week. Her name was Heidi. She was 13.5 years old and she came to me when I was very sick so I call her my little angel dog. She had nicknames and responded to all of them. She was a sweetheart and I miss her terribly. I am thinking of getting another one and naming her Holly.

Krystal is right. There is no such thing as a “teacup” Chihuahua. Unscrupulous breeders create the smallest Chihuahuas they can knowing that people want them, but they tend to be unhealthy and die at a younger age than larger (6 pound) Chihuahuas.

I have had three Chihuahuas. My old girl who recently died of heart disease at 13 was named Button, my 8 yo. male is Beau, and my 8wk. old puppy is Bella. We thought Emma was a cute name too, but Bella was definitely not an Emma. It was hard to come up with a name for my first Chihuahua, but everyone who met her said she was “cute as a button” and Button stuck. She was a bit small at 3lb.15oz. to 4lb.15oz., and was so sweet. It broke my heart when she died. My male is a sweetly too, but my new puppy is a real firecracker at times.

I just got a 2 year old female rescue Chihuahua mix. Her name was Felicia and THAT had to go. I thought a couple of days before I decided on Peanut. I also call her my little Peanut Butter Cup. But since the word Peanut is in that endearment she answers to it. It actually only took her a couple of days to start to answer to Peanut. She is tan and black and the name fits her perfectly. Even at 2 years old and a mix she is still very tiny.

Tulip would be similar and hopefully not confusing. Or LuLu. If you like her name, leave it alone. You could leave her official name Talulah but call her by a nickname, such as above. I named mine Jazabelle (not Jezebel from the bible) but we always called her Jazzy.

I just got my baby girl Friday I think the name Chica is so cute that is what I named her! But now I’m thinking about Foxy Chica which means Foxy girl. It’s hard I have never had a dog this tiny but she has such a big personality! I have 2 German shepherds, a cavalier spaniel and a sheltie and a cat lol. They all have names I could have used for this chi but can’t have two with the same name lol. Good luck with your puppy and naming her🐾🐾

I just brought home my little boy two nights ago. He is only 6 weeks old. I’m waiting to see his personality, before naming him. How long is to long to be unnamed, anyone know? I’ve read through all of the post, and I found some AMAZING suggestions, depending on his personality. Thanks everyone, bunches!

I just recently lost my chi baby boy of 17, his name was Rudy Paduty and I’m heartbroken. I have two of his babies, a boy and a girl, which helps a little with the tremendous loss. Their names are Kelso(Diego)and Chloe(Belle). Now I’m getting his little 6 week old great nephew soon, we are leaning toward Chavo(Sanchez)for his name. I love Chihuahuas so much, my whole family does. We also have a Boston Terrier who thinks he’s a chi named Tito Ortiz. Such beautiful creatures!

Bryan (Felipe, Middle Name) and George (Anthony, Middle Name) are my Chis. They’re both nine years old and we’ve had them since the moment they were born, both very privileged and spoiled. ; P

They can’t stand clothes or being away from us very long, again they’re brats and not very smart but eh. What can you do.

Bryan from Family Guy (I was young at the time, sue me xD, he’s white like Bryan so…) and George from Grey’s Anatomy. Their middle names just cause we thought they went well.

My little boy Chihuahua is named Bellsario Chi. One reason is because Bellsario is not really a name you hear for a dog; secondly I named his middle name Chi, (for a calm, peaceful dog) for high hopes he would be. As it turns out I have the best little boy ever. He is so smart, calm and never barks.

I wouldn’t take the 7 week old yet. I’ve been a licensed Chihuahua breeder for years. The pups need to stay with mom till 10 weeks, it’s actually a law by Department of Agriculture. You can Google this, it is true. The babies are so small they need mom a little longer! Congrats to owners!
